The Devil upright

Don't let the way he looks scare you: The Devil isn't about evil, but about attachments. This card brings to light whatever binds you, like habits, dependencies, relationships that drain you, fears or the chase after instant gratification that leaves you empty afterwards. It's the shadow, that part of you you'd rather not see but which, when you look at it honestly, loses much of its power. Notice the most important detail in the image: the chains are loose. No one is holding you there by force; often it's habit, comfort or fear that keeps you in place. The Devil also recognises desire and pleasure as legitimate parts of life, as long as you're the one doing the choosing. Ask yourself what controls you. Naming it is the first step towards freedom.

The Devil reversed

Reversed, The Devil usually brings good news: you're starting to realise what was holding you back and taking steps to free yourself. It may mark the moment to break with a habit or a dynamic you no longer want to keep up. It can also warn of a relapse, or of the temptation to go back to what's familiar. Be patient with yourself: loosening chains takes time, and every small act of freedom counts. Celebrate your progress, however modest it seems.
