The Hierophant upright
The Hierophant speaks of shared learning and the roots that hold you up. It represents the teachings handed down from generation to generation, institutions, rituals and the groups you belong to. It may suggest that you'd benefit from seeking guidance from someone experienced, signing up for a course or getting closer to a community that shares your values. It also invites you to reflect on your beliefs: where do they come from, and do they still make sense to you? This card doesn't ask for blind obedience, but for understanding. Knowing the rules well lets you choose consciously which ones you want to honour. Sometimes the well-trodden path is exactly what you need, because it offers structure, meaning and the relief of not having to invent everything from scratch.
The Hierophant reversed
Reversed, The Hierophant questions the rules. It may reflect that you feel constrained by the expectations of your family, society or a group, and that you need to do things your own way. On its more stuck side, it speaks of following rules you no longer feel are yours, simply out of habit or fear of rejection. This position encourages you to seek your own spiritual truth and become your own guide, without dismissing what you've learned.
